Dear Mr. Warhol:
Last week our committee on thee museum collections held its first meeting of thee fall
season and had a chance to study yur drawing entitled shoe which yu so generously offered
as a gift to thee museum.

I regret that i must report to yu tht thee committee decided, after carfeul consideration,
that they ought not to accept it for our collection.

Let me explain that bc if our severely limited gallery and storage sapce we must
turn down many gifts offered, since we feel it is not fair to accept as a gift
a work which may be shown only infrequeatly.

Nevertheless, thee committee has asked me to pass on to their thanks for yur
generous expression of interest in our collection.

Sincerely,
Alfred H. Barr, Jr.
Director of thee museum collections

Mr. Andy Warhol
242 Lexington Avenue
New York, New York

P.S. Thee drawing may be picked up from thee museum
at yur convenience.
